Healing with CBD
You may have heard the latest buzz around “CBD” and its potential therapeutic properties, but a lot of people are still quite unsure as to what CBD actually is and how it works in harmony with our bodies. While CBD and its benefits are still largely understudied, there are many current studies published that show how this wonderful naturally occurring compound can offer amazing medical and therapeutic benefits.
What is CBD?
CBD is a cannabis compound or “cannabinoid” that’s found in both hemp and marijuana cannabis plants. You might be more familiar with the most commonly found cannabinoid known as THC – the psychoactive inducing compound that causes a person to feel “high.” CBD, however, is a cannabinoid that has non-psychoactive effects, meaning anyone can take advantage of the therapeutic effects of cannabis without ever feeling “stoned.”
Cannabinoids and CBD:
CBD and the Endocannabinoid System
In the late 1990s, scientists who were researching the effects of THC on the human body discovered that our bodies have something called the endocannabinoid system. The body’s endocannabinoid system has been hailed as one of the most important systems involved with maintaining overall human health. Endocannabinoids and their receptors can be found throughout the body from the brain, organs, glands, immune cells, and connective tissue. Cannabinoids perform different roles within our bodies, but the overall goal is to maintain homeostasis. Or as we like to say, it helps balance the mind, body, and soul.
CBD as a Therapeutic
Medically, CBD has been shown to have amazing therapeutic benefits. Research is currently underway to unlock its full potential, but current studies have so far shown that CBD can help with:
- Memory Function
- Pain Modulation
Cannabinoids have also been tested to help treat several cancers including brain, breast, and prostate cancers.
What’s even more amazing, is that a recent report was published stating that:
- CBD is most commonly used to treat insomnia, depression, anxiety, and joint pain.
- 42% of people using CBD stopped using traditional medications.
- 80% of CBD users found CBD be very or extremely effective.
Will CBD Get Me High?
Marijuana and hemp are variations of the Cannabis Sativa plant, and while they are both related to each other, they interact with your body in very different ways. Marijuana contains high levels of THC, the psychoactive component that makes a person feel high. Hemp, on the other hand, has low levels of THC, usually, about 0.3 percent which isn’t enough to produce a psychoactive effect. Since CBD is made from hemp, it’s safe to say that taking CBD Oil will not get you high. This is great news for those looking for the healing properties of CBD and do not want any psychoactive inducing effects.
Is CBD Legal?
One of the biggest concerns for people who are new to CBD is whether or not its legal. Since CBD is non-psychoactive, it’s treated differently than marijuana. An Agricultural Bill was recently passed by Congress that legalizes the production, sale, and distribution hemp on the Federal level. Legalizing hemp will impact the production and cultivation of it within the next few years, giving the CBD industry a huge boost. With hemp more readily available, a greater variety of CBD products will be available on the market.
